I recall as a youngster going to Catholic Confession. I remember it as magical. Here was a place I could go and say out-loud  my discretions/sins and not be judged or admonished. The priest would just listen, deeply listen as he cared about my internal struggle. I mean really listen, without preaching, instructing or implying his own perspective. He would suggest ways of possibly making amends. It was about forgiveness and letting go of shame and guilt. Helping me realize my humanness as he knew he was only human too. It was all confidential between me, another human, and God. It was safe and I was accountable and responsible with myself. I could find ways of improving myself.

Though I finally opted not to become a priest, I did become a licensed therapist with a bunch of degrees and certifications. I hear confessions now in a different way. I  help the speaker feel that safety and deep genuine care that I did. I always remember that both of us are only human and striving to be better in our own ways though now I focus on you the client.  I feel so fortunate and privileged to bear witness to their journey. Saying one’s truth out-loud to another is so powerful. I am blessed as my clients are.
